Recently, I joined a panel for NYCxDESIGN Week hosted by Nordblooms, Hakwood, and CARL HANSEN & SØN titled The Future of Timeless Design in a Fast World. The discussion explored how designers can stay intentional and inspired in an industry moving faster than ever. To us, timeless design is not just about aesthetics, but about durability, thoughtful storytelling, and creating spaces that endure. At AJC Design, we focus on strong foundations through clean lines, quality craftsmanship, and timeless interiors layered with cultural character and personality. Some ideas we discussed on the panel were…
Material choices that earn their place
Understanding how a space will be used is essential when selecting materials, especially in high-use hospitality environments where durability is key. Materials like polyester, nylon, vinyl, and leather perform well because of their resilience and ease of care, while cotton and linen often struggle to withstand heavy use. Today, outdoor fabrics engineered for durability have become some of the most versatile and compelling options available.
On sustainability: the harder conversation
Sustainability is not always at the forefront of every project, often balancing alongside budgets, timelines, and client priorities. One approach we’ve found especially effective in multi-family design is incorporating durable built-in elements that reduce reliance on inexpensive, disposable furniture and encourage longer-lasting living solutions. Designing with longevity in mind naturally creates more sustainable spaces by reducing waste over time. Whenever possible, we also prioritize working with local vendors, which supports craftsmanship, strengthens collaboration, and helps reduce transportation impact.
Technology: a tool, not a statement
The challenge with technology in hospitality design is not its availability, but making sure it doesn’t overwhelm the guest experience. Simplicity and intuitive design often create more comfort than overly complicated systems. When seamlessly integrated, technology can genuinely enhance a space while remaining almost unnoticed. At the same time, advancements in manufacturing and production have dramatically shortened timelines, allowing industries to create innovative, high-quality designs faster than ever before without sacrificing beauty or performance.
Building brands that belong
In multi-family design, community is the brand. Spaces that provide thoughtful amenities, shared experiences, and a real sense of belonging communicate value through lived experience rather than marketing language. Working with local artisans and makers reinforces that connection to place. In hospitality, timelessness is communicated through consistency and hallmark details that guests come to recognize and return for. Ultimately, the balance between luxury and warmth or between elevated and comfortable is what makes a stay memorable.
The Importance of Curiosity in Design
Designers should remain curious, observant, and open to inspiration from the world around them. When I first started in the industry, everything was done by hand, which taught us to think creatively and rely on experience and observation. Today’s designers should look beyond the screen—exploring art, culture, travel, and everyday surroundings to develop a more authentic design perspective.
