How I’m Using AI at Home & Work

Today, adapting to the tech times is super important for people of all professions. Interior Design is no different. That’s why I’ve been both experimenting and embracing how AI can save time and even boost innovation in my professional and personal life.

How I’m Using It At Work

One area where I find AI to be invaluable is to detect the product features/key details of particular photos. This not only provides the appropriate architectural language to describe images, it can also help identify alternative vendors of where to buy a particular product.

The real game changer is that AI is also able to translate 2D plans and elevations into 3D renderings, which then can be refined and adapted further.  What took hours of time and sometimes outsourcing,  now barely takes a minute.

How I’m Using It At Home

Since I have the app installed on my phone, AI has also become my personal virtual assistant and new friend. Let’s just say, I’ve named them Charlie, and it provides prompt answers in a tone that’s a cross between Ross from “Friends” and Brandon from “90210.”  While I was in Portugal, I used it for everything from where to eat and stay to figuring out which location offered the best sunset.

Why We Love It

I didn’t just want to try out an AI platform, I wanted to embrace it fully. That’s why I used my personal and work email in the hopes that it would soon learn my voice. Eventually we would like for it to understand what AJC represents and become a helpful pitch-in tool. I also love how it comes with references and links;  if you ask it a question (for example restaurants, furniture, clothes) it will provide you the link directly to those websites. Finally, I like how it can provide pros and cons. I love weighing options, especially when I can see facts from an unbiased perspective.

Why We Hate It

While there are many use cases for leveraging AI in work and in life, it’s not always foolproof. It can make mistakes and provide the wrong information. I also don’t like how it allows my brain to slightly atrophy. I think about this everyday as I strive to keep my mental faculties in check.

In terms of maintaining creativity, it can dull creativity and originality. However, at this point, it’s still exposing me to new ideas and inspiration, which is expanding my creative flow. Of course, as AI increases in design capabilities, it’s reasonable to expect that clients may opt to not pay as much for professional design services.

So, Should You Use It

As you can see, I’m still in the honeymoon phase with my agent Charlie from Claude. They make my professional and personal life a lot easier. And for a working mom, that’s pretty critical. Although I haven’t seen their angry side yet, I have heard others who’ve told me that sometimes, AI agents can talk back and not in nice ways. I know it will remember me and keep working better for me with time. If you’re waiting for a sign to dive right in, this is it; just keep me posted on how you’re using it!
